The curious case of Blue liquid bottle and Dogs or cats

Bottle with blue liquid keeps away dogs

Sometimes a lot of people do something which noone knows how it works, or even whether it works. Putting a half filled bottle of water, sometimes blue or green coloured water - is one of those tips. No one knows for sure whether it works. Those who know it worked are not sure why it works. But this DIY (Do It Yourself) trick is being tried by many households. The idea behind this is that it will keep dogs and cats away from defecating on the property. No one has yet to do a controlled study on whether this trick actually works, but a number of those who have resorted to this method of combating canine caca have reported that it did indeed improve matters, however others who also tried it reported that it didn't deter the neighborhood dogs from using their lawns as personal lavatories.

Is there anything to this notion or not? Who knows? For the record, those who have gone this route have used everything from clear glass jars to clear (or green) one-liter plastic soda bottles to opaque, gallon-sized plastic milk jugs. They've also either planted the containers standing upright or laid them on their sides.

What do the Veterinary Experts Say:

Veterinary experts too admitted that the phenomenon, if true, is puzzling. According to a veterinarian, the blue reflection from the fluid might be scaring the dogs and that's why they fear to come near the bottles. But, no study has been conducted so far on the reason behind blue colour deterring stray dogs,

Though many believe that dogs are colour blind and see everything only in black and white, a study conducted in Russia dispels this. The study indicated that dogs could distinguish between yellow and blue colours.

Some believe Dogs won't foul a source of drinking water, or they won't mess where there's food or water to be found.

Some other ideas you may try to deter Dogs and Cats:

1. Mothballs - Don’t throw out old mothballs. Scatter them around your gardens and flowerbeds to keep cats, dogs, and rodents away. Animals hate the smell!

2. Coffee Grounds -  Kitty won’t think of your garden as a latrine anymore if you spread a pungent mixture of orange peels and used coffee grounds around your plants. The mix acts as great fertilizer too.

3. Vinegar  - Some animals — including cats, deer, dogs, rabbits, and raccoons — can’t stand the scent of vinegar even after it has dried. You can keep these unauthorized visitors out of your garden by soaking several recycled rags in white vinegar, and placing them on stakes around your veggies. Resoak the rags about every 7-10 days.

You better be a judge and let us know whether the trick has stopped the dogs and the cats from defecating at your lawn. Happy tricking.
